Project Overview

Australian Carbon Vault (ACV) was awarded Greenhouse Gas Storage Exploration Licence B (GSEL-B) on 16 March 2026, covering 2,070 km² (~0.5 million acres) in the Otway Basin, South Australia, near Mount Gambier. This project, known as the Otway Basin GSEL-B Hub, represents ACV’s second major storage licence area.

ACV is uniquely positioned to lead Asia-Pacific decarbonisation efforts, in one of the few jurisdictions where commercial CO₂ injection can commence today under a clear, enabling framework. The tway Basin GSEL-B SEO and EIR have been developed to meet the requirements of the Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2009 (SA).

About the Otway Basin

The Otway Basin is a proven sedimentary basin in South Australia with established geological understanding and infrastructure proximity near Mount Gambier. The GSEL-B licence area provides ACV with a strategically located storage hub to service point-source emitters and future CO₂ importation from domestic and international customers.

ACV continues to secure partnerships with world-class technology and infrastructure companies — including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Fearnleys, Flinders Ports, Fyfe, Linfox and HSBC — to advance DAC deployment and deliver permanent CO₂ storage solutions for point source emitters.

About the Consultation

ACV invites any person or organisation whose functions, interests or activities may be affected by the Otway Basin GSEL-B Hub to review the SEO and EIR and provide feedback. All submissions will be considered before documents are finalised and submitted to the SA Department of Energy and Mining.

What is the Limestone Creek CCS Hub?

The Limestone Creek CCS Hub is ACV’s Otway Basin project — GSEL-B covering 2,070 km² near Mount Gambier, SA. Awarded 16 March 2026, it is ACV’s second major CCS licence area providing a strategically located storage hub.

What is GDEL-B?

GSEL-B is Greenhouse Gas Storage Exploration Licence B — the licence type granted by the SA Government for greenhouse gas storage exploration. ACV’s GSEL-B covers 2,070 km² in the Otway Basin near Mount Gambier.

Any person or organisation whose functions, interests or activities may be affected — including community members, landholders, Indigenous communities, environmental groups, industry, government and researchers.

Is ACV involved in oil production?

No. ACV is solely focused on permanent carbon capture and storage with no involvement in enhanced oil recovery or any oil and gas production activities.
